2024 was both busy and productive for Glenoch Angus, marked by significant milestones, industry involvement, and continued dedication to produce bulls suitable for Northern Australian conditions. The year started on a strong note with substantial rainfall in January, which replenished Charleys Creek and the surrounding lagoons. This set the stage for a promising autumn, boosting confidence in the cattle market, although it did delay the planting of winter oats intended to fatten sale bulls.
Throughout the year, preparations for the bull sale remained a top priority and our team worked towards this goal. As weaning season arrived in Autumn, we looked forward to seeing the progeny of our selected AI sires and homebred bulls. One standout weaner was Glenoch Ultimate QBG23U128, a Beast Mode son. His outstanding phenotype, low birth weight and growth figures make him suitable for our program and we are looking forward to seeing how he grows out.
Marketing and delivering Private Treaty bulls kept us busy throughout the year. Talking to our clients and seeing their properties gave us a valuable opportunity to chat with them and to see how their program works with our bulls. In May, we attended Beef Australia in Rockhampton, an event that showcases the Australian beef industry to a global audience. Roger and Angus Australia CEO Scott Wright were featured on Beef Radio, promoting Angus cattle, while we also participated in a promotional segment for the World Angus Forum 2025, incorporating Roger’s well-known ‘Angus among the Gum Trees’ humour.
During May, some of our long-term clients come to Glenoch to select their bulls based on specific EBV’s parameters of average days to calving, growth and mature cow weights. Their insights helped us refine our breeding decisions and strengthen the quality of our matings. In line with our commitment to animal health, we continued our vaccination program. The bulls are on leucaena and pasture and grass in the Summer and Autumn, then rotated onto oats from May. A significant genomic project was also completed, verifying the parentage of our entire cow herd through DNA collection. Moving forward, we will now collect tissue samples at weaning to confirm the parentage of each calf.
Following a dry spring in 2023, pregnancy rates were fair, and as favourable rainfall fell throughout the year, we capitalised on the buoyancy of the cattle market and sold the cast for age cows at good returns. This year also saw a major rebranding initiative as we transitioned from Sandon Glenoch Angus to Glenoch Angus, reinforcing our identity through a refreshed website, social media presence, and a prominent billboard east of Dalby. In keeping with the history of the stud, Glenoch Angus continue to have a combined sale under the banner of Sandon Glenoch Angus, along with NB Gen.
In August we purchased JK Cattle Co Tarantino T636, the top-priced bull at the JK Angus sale, for $38,000. Tarantino carries the bloodlines of Glenoch Flower QBGB133 and Glenoch Flower QBGB169 with faultless calving records on 11 and 12 calves respectively and 373- and 363-day intervals. The performance and strength of these two cows is hardly surprising given the great cow bulls in their pedigrees. His excellent birth, growth, and carcass traits make him a valuable addition to our breeding program.
The Annual Sandon Glenoch Angus sale in August was successful, achieving a solid average of $9,891. Purchasers were both loyal clients and new buyers from Northern Australia. The bulls that were offered gave buyers an excellent opportunity to purchase new genetics that were commercially relevant.
A particularly memorable moment during the sale was the recognition of Roger’s 50 years of commitment to the Angus Society by Angus Australia President Sinclair Munro. This honour was a proud occasion for the Boshammer family, and the family’s longstanding dedication to Angus breeding. Roger’s late uncle, Jack Atkin, received the award in 1999. A remarkable achievement for Roger and Jack.
Following the sale, we travelled to Mongolia as Roger’s daughter, Belinda, was competing in the Mongol Derby. We enjoyed being at the base camp with fellow Aussies and team members from around the world, and we learnt about the Mongolian culture and cheered Bindi on at the finish line. In late August, we flew to Camooweal to judge the Paraway Pastoral Colt Challenge at Rocklands Station where ringers from neighbouring stations competed. It was a great show of camaraderie and lots of fun.
Our involvement in the Campdraft community remains strong, with continued sponsorship and cattle lending at key events, including Willinga – Juandah Plains Ladies, Chinchilla Grandmother father Clock Ladies, and the Dalby Stock Horse Sale. It is rewarding to see the progeny of our bulls showcased in the campdraft arena where we can see the type of progeny our bulls are producing and to reconnect with friends in the industry.
As the AI season approached, we carefully selected the following overseas and Australian sires that align with our clients’ breeding objectives. Sterling Pacific, Hoover About It, Glenoch Ultimate U128, JK Cattle Co Tarantino T636, Booroomooka Theodore T246, Sterling Confidence Plus, Landfall Keystone K132, Mandayan Mainland T221, and Cluden Newry Uppercut U15. Uppercut recently sold for $275,000 at the Cluden Newry sale recently and his semen is highly sought after. We also collected semen from Glenoch Titus T133, a 2024 sale bull with exceptional EBVs and strong pedigree, to further strengthen our program.
Our Private Treaty yearlings are now available for sale from November through autumn. We invite those interested in Glenoch Angus genetics to contact us for more information or to arrange a visit.
